Akashi Shosaku (b. 1946) is a Japanese potter from Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. He began his ceramic journey in 1962 under the mentorship of Shoji Hamada. In 1981, Akashi established his own kiln in Doso, Mashiko-cho, marking the start of his independent career .
His works, deeply rooted in the Mingei tradition, often feature persimmon and black glazes inherited from Hamada. Akashi’s creations range from everyday tableware to large vases, showcasing both functionality and artistic expression. His pieces have been selected for numerous exhibitions, including the National Ceramic Exhibition and the Japan Folk Art Exhibition. Notably, he received the Newcomer Award at the National Kokuten Exhibition in 1987.
Throughout his career, Akashi has been recognised with several accolades, such as the Tochigi Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award. His contributions to the ceramic arts continue to influence and inspire within the Mashiko pottery community.
