William/Bill Marshall was the first local apprentice taken on at the Leach. He stayed at the pottery for 40 years and became Bernard’s right hand man, and the workshops unofficial foreman. He also played a major part in guiding and instructing the students that came through the pottery. He left the Leach in 1977 to set up his own workshop in Lelant near St Ives. His work that he made at the Leach and later at Lelant is much sought after by international collectors and devotees of his work.
