Middlemiss Jonathan

Jonathan Middlemiss (1949–2021)

Featured in public and private collections worldwide, Jon Middlemiss’ ceramics combine structure, geometry and multi glazed surfaces, creating forms that are layered, architectural, and dynamically composed.

From the 1980s onward, he built an international career, his work exhibited widely from Cologne and Los Angeles to Japan and, later, the Middle East. In 1989, Middlemiss was elected onto the British Crafts Council’s Select Index. In 1992, he was elected Fellow of the Crafts Potters Association of Great Britain and the Chambre Syndicale des Céramistes et Ateliers d’Art de France, and that same year he was awarded the Gold Medal at the 13th Biennale Internationale de Céramique d’Art in Vallauris, France, one of the most prestigious international awards celebrating contemporary ceramic art. In 1994, he became a Member of the International Academy of Ceramics in Prague.

From the late 1990s, Middlemiss lectured ceramics and contemporary craft, and expanded into interdisciplinary work, including ceramic installations, public commissions and creative workshops. He continued to produce ceramics and increasingly, paintings that drew on a deep connection to landscape and sensory experience.

Jonathan Middlemiss was a visionary whose independent approach and uncompromising application of expression and form set his work apart. With a distinctive and unique style that pushed the boundaries of ceramics and art, he leaves a remarkable legacy that continues to inspire collectors and makers alike.
