Born in Wales 1951 – 2020.
Phil lived and worked in Rhayader, mid Wales from 1978 where he set up his pottery overlooking the Wye Valley in 1984. His pots were usually hand thrown and functional; simple in form and with decoration inspired by nature such as leaves and grasses. He made traditional bottles and bowls as well as jugs and jars in the Anglo-oriental tradition of Bernard Leach. He used both salt-glaze and ash glazes in his work, giving a range of colours through greys and greens of celadon to warm oranges and rich dark tenmokus. An influential figure in British pottery he had been active in the Craft Potters Association and the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth. He wrote several books; Ash Glazes, A&C Black 1992, Throwing Pots, A&C Black 2000, Salt Glazing A&C Black, 2002
