Kawai Kanjiro 1890-1966 Japan. Kanjiro became interested in pottery as a child by watching a nearby farmer who made pottery in his spare time. He knew him wanted to become a potter by the age of 16. Kawai built his own climbing kiln in Kyoto in 1920 and was trained in the use of chemical glazes where he gained wide recognition. He is regarded as a master of glazes. He sought to combine modern methods of manufacture with traditional Japanese and English design.
